Kathy Sulaver will become the director of special education in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District effective this week. Sulaver replaces Joe Fimiani, who recently resigned from the position after a long career at the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
Sulaver has worked with the district as special-education department coordinator, summer school principal, assistant principal and special-education teacher at Los Altos High. Her professional career is concentrated in the area of special education as both a teacher and instructional leader.
With more than 30 years of service in the district, Sulaver’s background is ideal for the position, according to district officials. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and a master’s degree from Santa Clara University.
“We wish Kathy well in her new position at the district office,” said Los Altos High Principal Wynne Satterwhite. “(Los Altos High) will miss her greatly, not only her day-to-day presence on campus as a teacher, department coordinator and student advocate, but also as an educational leader and driving force for change and reform on our campus. We know that she will bring a great deal of passion for students and their families, and a strong working knowledge of special-education pedagogy to this new position.
Satterwhite said she would miss seeing Sulaver daily on campus, but she has her support in the new position.
“Real strengths that Kathy brings to this new position are her ability to collaborate with students, parents and staff to provide the best program available to our district students, her unwavering work ethic and her focus on academic success for each student,” Satterwhite said.
