The Los Altos Town Crier awarded its annual Journalism Scholarships to Jason Hu of Los Altos High School and Naomi Cohen of Mountain View High.
Hu and Cohen each received $1,000 toward their college tuition in recognition of their exemplary accomplishments in journalism during high school and the promise of success in future writing endeavors.
After working on The Talon, the Los Altos High newspaper, for three years, Hu said he is eager to continue writing at Brown University next year.
“With Brown’s open curriculum and interdisciplinary spirit, I look forward to not only improving as a writer, but expanding my perspectives to grow as a storyteller and a journalist,” Hu said in his scholarship application.
Cohen served as a staff writer, assistant editor and news editor for the Mountain View High paper, Oracle. Cohen plans to attend Columbia University in the fall.
“In the context of journalism, I will make my voice matter not only by being stingy with my style in writing for the Columbia Daily Spectator – the school’s daily paper – but by appealing to readers’ true needs like empathy and truth,” she said in her application. “Because if a paper cannot speak to its public, it can say nothing.”
The Town Crier offers journalism scholarships annually to graduates of the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s comprehensive high schools.
