An instrumental musical ensemble from Los Altos High School is scheduled to tour Spain and France this month for a cultural-music exchange.
The 70 travelers, including students from eight different instrumental groups, will intermingle with European musicians and art groups during the 13-day trip. Performances in Barcelona, Avignon, Lyon and Paris will include compositions that highlight the musical and cultural exchange among countries and include selections from Spanish, French and American composers.
The tour will kick off with a performance at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, where the Los Altos group will share the stage with a Spanish Flamenco group.
The opportunity to play at the Fête de la Musique, in Lyon, France, crowns the exchange. This annual international celebration of music coincides with the summer solstice, June 21. It highlights international understanding and cooperation through music. Half a million people are expected to attend the 24-hour festival, and thousands for the group’s performance on the main stage at Place des Terreaux in the center of Lyon.
Some of the student musicians will participate in a Batucada, a Brazilian/African drumming event with up to a thousand percussionists. The city of Lyon will host the Los Altos students for a French dinner following the concert.
The tour ends in Paris. In addition to the Los Altos High repertoire, the musicians will appear with the Orchestre d’Harmonie du Conservatoire of Paris. Selections include John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme.” Pierre Boutillier, the Paris orchestra’s conductor, and Ted Ferrucci, Instrumental Director for Los Altos High School, will conduct the performance jointly.
“One of the most exciting elements of this tour is that each performance will include musical and social exchange with local ensembles,” Ferrucci said. “Previous tours have typically had one, maybe two exchange performances.”
A pre-tour concert, open to the public, is scheduled 7 p.m. June 10 at the Eagle Theater, Los Altos High School. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens.
