The Los Altos School District will offer summer school classes this year at Loyola Elementary School and Blach Intermediate School. Summer school will begin June 23 and end July 18. School will not be in session on July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
This summer's program will feature a wide variety of learning opportunities and challenges for all students entering grades 2-7 this fall. Primary classes in previous years have included: "Exploring Mathematics," "Outdoor Experiences," "Story-Telling & Literature," "Movin' Groovin' Art," "From Mouse to Moose (computers)," and "Summer Spanish." The upper grade program has offered: "Robotics," "Master Chefs," "Keyboarding and Computer Applications," "The Galactic Future (science)," "Health/Outdoor Activities," "Art Exploration," "Problem Solving Using Geometry," "Drama/Musical Theater," "First Hand Experiences,' "Summer Chorus," and "Jazz Band."
All classes will be offered subject to enrollment. Brochures with final course details will be sent home to all district students before the April l4-18 Spring Break.
By April 10, brochures will be available at the District Office, 201 Covington Road, Los Altos (phone: 941-4010).
Additionally, the Los Altos School District will offer MSA (multi-sensory approach) classes for Los Altos School District students currently enrolled in grades 1 and 2. MSA classes will be held on the Santa Rita campus and focus on additional basic skills assistance in reading and language arts through a multi-sensory approach.
MSA classes are offered in a structured, sequential three-and-one-half-hour morning program. Participation in the MSA summer session is by teacher recommendation.
All students living within Los Altos School District boundaries entering grades 2 through 7 in the fall of 1997 are encouraged to participate in the summer school program.
The summer school program has enjoyed tremendous success in the past and has been well received by students and parents alike, according to district officials.
The district requests a $100 donation from parents whose students will attend summer school (pro-rated for partial program). This donation will help defray the cost of the program, which is only partially supported by state school funds.
Classes for primary grades (24, fall placement) will be held at Loyola Elementary School, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos (phone: 964-5165). Intermediate grades (5-7, Fall placement) will meet at Blach Intermediate School, 1120 Covington Road, Los Altos (964-1196). Classes will be scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day of the session.
Registration for all summer school programs will take place at Springer Elementary School, 1120 Rose Ave., Mountain View, on Saturday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Summer school class lists will be posted in school offices on June 19.
