The Loyola School K-Kids Club has set a goal of collecting 1,200 pairs of eyeglasses throughout the Los Altos area before the end of March. Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, K-Kids has collected approximately 1,000 pairs a year for the past six years.
Jill Muchow Rode, director of development for Direct Relief International, the recipient of the eyeglasses, thanked the Loyola K-Kids in a letter for their previous hard work.
“If not for these donated glasses, many of these patients would go without. Your effort to get unused eyeglasses for these patients is extremely important,” Muchow Rode wrote. “Volunteers put each pair through an analyzer which tells the correction of that particular pair. The correction is taped to each pair of glasses. When we have 350 pair of glasses for nearsightedness, we put them carefully in a carton. The same is true for glasses for farsightedness and for simple magnification for reading.”
The glasses are distributed around the world to those who can’t afford to purchase them.
