Construction staging work has begun on a new phase of the streetscape plan for First Street in downtown Los Altos. The area of work concerns a stretch of First between Shasta Street and Parking Plaza North, located in front of Safeway.
According to city officials, the goal of the First Street Streetscape Project Phase 1B is to update infrastructure while improving public access, pedestrian safety and invigorating the downtown area.
Streetscape plans include widening of sidewalks to improve pedestrian access, street corner widening and crosswalk upgrades, decorative street lighting and additional street trees. Other improvements include new storm drains, inlets and rain gardens to accommodate storm water runoff and new subsurface irrigation systems to increase water use efficiency.
City officials anticipate a "temporary loss" of approximately 16 parking stalls in Parking Plaza North to accommodate construction equipment and materials. Additionally, parking along First Street will soon be restricted as part of the private Safeway development. The city's contractor, Redgwick Construction, has agreed to have construction crews park in an alternate location outside of the downtown core to reduce further parking loss.
Auto traffic will continue on First Street throughout the course of construction, though at times, traffic may be reduced to one-way.
