Los Altos Police last week arrested a 19-year-old San Jose woman they believe is responsible for an April 5 car theft on Arboleda Drive.
According to Sgt. Scott McCrossin, police arrested Karina Hernandez in San Jose April 9 on charges of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamines and driving without a license.
Hernandez’s arrest comes after a Los Altos resident reported that someone stole her unlocked 2000 Volkswagen Passat from the 600 block of Arboleda April 5. The victim reported that the car might have contained a spare set of keys.
McCrossin said the arrest occurred after a Los Altos Police detective assigned to the Santa Clara County Regional Auto Theft Task Force spotted Hernandez parking a different stolen vehicle – which police believe is connected to a car theft case out of San Jose – next to the stolen Passat at an apartment complex on Bowling Green Drive in San Jose.
McCrossin noted that the detective then witnessed Hernandez getting into the Passat and trailed her as she drove and later parked near an intersection at Sibelus Avenue in San Jose. Police arrested Hernandez shortly thereafter as she walked down the street with a 17-year-old female juvenile.
Police booked Hernandez into Santa Clara County Main Jail on the aforementioned charges. She is being held without bail.
