LAH man arrested for possession of child pornography
San Mateo police arrested a 19-year-old Los Altos Hills man March 27 on charges that include possession of child pornography.
According to police, a concerned parent contacted authorities after observing a man identified as Edward George Mielke acting suspiciously and taking pictures of young children with his cellphone at Peninsula Gymnastics, located on the 1700 block of Leslie Street.
Police noted that the witness had seen Mielke “hanging around” the gymnastics facility for the past several weeks.
Patrol officers arrested Mielke after examining his phone, which contained photos of underage children outside the facility and taking part in physical activities at other locations, in addition to Internet child pornography downloaded from a foreign website.
Police notified the families of photographed children connected to Peninsula Gymnastics.
A subsequent search of Mielke’s home uncovered additional suspicious photographs and materials.
Mielke was booked into San Mateo County Jail on charges of child annoyance and possessing child pornography.
Police are working closely with the staff at Peninsula Gymnastics to determine whether there was any inappropriate contact between Mielke and gym participants and whether any of the students photographed or otherwise affected have additional concerns that should be addressed.
