Dittmer's opens its doors

More than a year and a half of waiting came to an end for Dittmer’s Gourmet Meats & Wurst-Haus Inc. as the market opened its doors today (Aug. 8) to a throng of waiting customers.

Market founder Dittmer Bubert opened at precisely 10 a.m., greeting a line of waiting customers with an ear-to-ear grin and tears streaming down his face.

Inside, employees patiently took orders from customers eyeing favorites such as German salami, braunschweiger and paprika sausage.

Bubert called the long-awaited opening an “unreal” moment.

The scene comes a day after the Bubert family announced its plans to open to its 4,500 Facebook followers. The Buberts used the social media site as a way to stay connected to longtime customers, posting updates and photos during construction of their new location at 4540 El Camino Real. The family relocated the market to Los Altos after a two-alarm fire ravaged its longtime Mountain View location at 400 San Antonio Road January 2011.

“I know we have a lot of loyal customers and they’ve been asking us and asking us when we’re going to open,” Bubert said. “Now we’re finally here.”
