Los Altos man struck and killed by train

Los Altos resident Joshua Meyer Stern was struck and killed by a Baby Bullet Train at Caltrain’s San Antonio station June 6, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office.

Stern, 35, was pronounced dead at approximately 9:59 a.m.

According to Caltrain’s Twitter feed, the No. 332 train struck Stern as it traveled southbound past the San Antonio station. The train was not scheduled to stop at the station.

The accident is under investigation. Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office officials estimate that a full report could take six to 12 weeks to complete.

Safeway construction set to begin in 2013

Safeway officials said the company plans to begin construction on a new store at 160 First St. in early 2013.

“We will plan to commence construction right after the first of the year, with a scheduled opening in December of 2013,” wrote Wendy Gutshall, Safeway manager of public and government affairs, in an email to the Town Crier.

Gutshall said the company’s construction timeline allows the current 45-year-old store to remain open through the 2012 holiday season.

She added that the company plans to submit building permit applications to the city within 60-90 days.

The Los Altos City Council in January approved Safeway’s plans to build a new two-story, 45,265-square-foot market. The project includes 154 parking spaces, 129 designated as public parking as part of an agreement with the city after Safeway fell 72 parking spaces short of city code requirements.
