Hit-and-run suspect arrested in Los Altos after collision
March 31, 12:32 p.m., Foothill Expressway and Main Street: A motorist suspected of fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run accident in Sunnyvale was arrested in Los Altos after colliding with a vehicle on Foothill Expressway.
Los Altos Police agent Mark Bautista said the motorist, Brian Rathjen, was driving on the wrong side of the expressway, traveling northbound, when he collided with another vehicle near Main Street. Rathjen left the scene of the accident on foot and was later found by police K9 units hiding in a resident’s backyard, where he surrendered.
Earlier in the day, Rathjen fled the scene of an accident in which he struck two pedestrians in the intersection of Hollenbeck Avenue and Danforth Drive, according to a Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) report.
Police and emergency medical units found the pedestrians unresponsive in the middle of the intersection. The victims were treated on-scene before being transported to Stanford Hospital’s Trauma Center.
One victim, a 59-year-old male, was taken off life support and died Monday morning, according to Sunnyvale DPS Capt. Dave Verbrugge. The second victim, a 64-year-old female, remains in critical condition.
March 26, 11:10 a.m., Stevens Place: Patrol officers made contact with a 32-year-old male transient. A subsequent search led to discovery of methamphetamines and a pipe in the transient’s possession. Police arrested the suspect and booked him into Santa Clara County Main Jail for possession of a controlled substance.
