Norma Melchor, a generous contributor to El Camino Hospital since its very beginning more than 50 years ago, has died. Mrs. Melchor, 87, died Friday evening (Feb. 17) at the hospital after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Melchor, a former nurse, first became involved in the hospital in 1957 when she joined the hospital auxiliary. She was a hospital district board member for 16 years (1974-1990). With husband Jack, she has been instrumental in producing millions of dollars in donations through the El Camino Hospital Foundation.
"Norma represented the heart of El Camino Hospital and the bedrock of the El Camino Hospital Foundation," said hospital CEO Tomi Ryba. "With her delightful sense of fun, her impish smile, her keen intelligence, her willingness to share her good fortune with others and her enthusiasm for both the hospital and its fundraising arm, Norma kept us on our toes, encouraging our best work as she embraced every new initiative that would benefit the health of her community."
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service scheduled 2 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 23) at the Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos. A reception is scheduled to follow at the Los Altos Golf and Country Club, 1560 Country Club Drive.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Melchor's memory may be sent to the El Camino Hospital Foundation, 2500 Grant Road PAR116, Mountain View, CA 94040.
