As the Dow crept up to surpass the somewhat magic 12,000 last week, the Town Crier 50 showed even better numbers. The 50 public stocks in the index, most of which are from companies with executives making Los Altos and Los Altos Hills their hometowns, increased a little more than 14 percent in the year-plus since Jan. 4. Comparatively, the Dow rose 12 percent.
In that same period, Fortinet is in the lead among the TC 50, doubling in value as a worldwide leader of unified threat management solutions, from $18 to more than $40, a 109 percent increase. And the network security provider Cepheid saw its stock rise from $12.48 to a little more than $24, a 90 percent increase.
Finally, with Stockholm-based ASSA ABLOY’s Jan. 28 acquisition of a TC 50 company, LaserCard Corporation (LCRD), the search is on for a new company to replace it.
