City to close downtown intersection

The city of Los Altos is scheduled to close the intersection of State and First streets for a three-week period starting in late May.

The closure, slated May 27 through June 13, is subject to change because of poor weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances, according to city officials.

The intersection shutdown is required as part of the city’s construction agreement with Safeway. The national grocer, currently building a new 45,000-square-foot market downtown, is responsible for updating the intersection and crosswalks at the corner of State and First streets.

Construction in the area calls for the closure of First Street between the Central Parking Plaza (behind Peet’s Coffee & Tea) and the North Parking Plaza (behind Balisimo Salon), as well as the block of State Street between First and Second streets.

Erica Ray, Los Altos public information coordinator, confirmed that the intersection’s closure will coincide with the return of the State Street Green pop-up park between First and Second streets. As previously reported in the April 23 issue of the Town Crier, the temporary park – then still under discussion – will return with little to no scheduled programming in an effort to attract business to affected merchants in the area during construction.
