An 85-year-old Cupertino woman driving southbound on Foothill Expressway died after colliding with several other vehicles at the Cristo Rey Drive intersection in south Los Altos at approximately 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Los Altos Police Capt. Andy Galea said the woman first collided with a car before the Cristo Rey intersection but continued down Foothill. She then collided with a second car traveling eastbound through the Cristo Rey intersection, which caused her vehicle to cross Foothill's median and hit a vehicle in the left-hand turn lane, which then ricocheted into two other cars.
According to a police statement, the victim's car caught fire after the collisions.
One other driver was taken to Stanford Hospital with serious injuries the police department described as not life-threatening.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Los Altos police and Santa Clara County Sheriffs deputies were diverting traffic in either direction of Foothill. Los Altos police Sgt. Cameron Shearer said roads were reopened by approximately 2:45 p.m.
