The non-profit that stocks empty larders in this area is putting out a call for extra help. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties has received fewer donations of food and cash this year, at the same it is trying to feed an increasing number of hungry people.
The food bank particularly seeks cash donations with which it can purchase bulk items, stretching a dollar farther than individual consumers can.
Most-needed food items include protein ingredients such as peanut butter, canned tuna and beans, and meals-in-a-can like stew. Because Second Harvest serves many people who are homeless or don't have kitchens, pop-top cans are an important feature to look for donations.
