A building that has served as the longtime home to a familiar Los Altos restaurant needs a facelift – and more space – according to property owner RKT Group LLC.
The Los Altos Planning and Transportation Commission (PTC) is scheduled Thursday to review an expansion project for 4940 El Camino Real – home of The Boardwalk restaurant. If PTC approves the project, it would go before the Los Altos City Council for a final review.
The proposal would add 3,647 square feet to the nearly 40-year-old mixed-use building, which has housed The Boardwalk since 1975 and also includes first- and second-floor office space. The project received a recommendation of approval Nov. 20 from the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission.
“It’s going to be a whole new look for the area,” said Sierra Davis, the city’s assistant planner, of RKT Group’s goal to increase the size of the two-story structure and update its facade.
Davis noted that RKT Group seeks a 915-square-foot addition to the front of the building, which faces El Camino Real, and a ground-level outdoor patio with customer seating.
“It’ll either be a cafe on the bottom or an expansion of The Boardwalk restaurant,” Davis said.
She added that the building’s expansion plan meets all zoning code requirements – with no outstanding development circumstances to prevent its potential approval.
“There are no variances for this. It’s a pretty straightforward application,” Davis said.
A staff report noted that expansion plans include an additional 2,764 square feet of first- and second-story office space with bathrooms, storage, stairways and a new main entrance and lobby area at ground level for office tenants. New indoor and outdoor architectural elements would aim to update the overall look of the 1960s-era building.
Improvements would include additional parking spaces that meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, new landscaping and a pedestrian pathway connecting the building to the sidewalk. The property’s current configuration requires pedestrians accessing the building to cross its parking lot.
The additions as proposed, Davis said, would expand the building’s size to 15,227 square feet (gross) and reduce its setback from El Camino Real from 50 feet to approximately 26 feet.
