A Truman Avenue resident’s frightening encounter with a burglar prompted Los Altos police last week to ask members of the public to step forward with information that could lead to an arrest.
Los Altos Police Sgt. Cameron Shearer told the Town Crier that investigators are asking residents who may have been near the intersection of Fremont and Truman avenues at approximately 1:43 p.m. Dec. 27 to provide any information that could help identify the burglary suspect. He is described as a 6-foot-tall Latino male in his 30s, wearing boots and a green construction safety vest.
In addition, Shearer noted, police are seeking details about the suspect’s getaway vehicle, described as a white “construction type” van with a sliding side door and no rear passenger windows on either side. Shearer noted that the victim was unable to provide a description of a second male who was sitting in the driver seat of the van, which was parked within view of motorists traveling along the Truman and Fremont avenues intersection at the time.
Shearer said the Truman/Fremont intersection was experiencing heavy traffic at the time of the attempt – known commonly by police as a “hot prowl” burglary. He specifically noted that “probably 30 cars passed by the van” during the time.
“That intersection was completely backed up at Fremont and Truman. … We’re hoping that maybe somebody saw something,” Shearer said.
According to Shearer, the suspects parked the van near the intersection before one of them approached a nearby house and knocked on the door. When no one answered, the suspect kicked open the front door and accessed the home, only to run into the homeowner when he entered one of the bedrooms. The suspect subsequently turned and fled the residence without taking any items.
Shearer added that investigators are specifically interested in learning more about the identity of the second suspect – the driver. They are also seeking more details about the van – specifically whether it may have had a company logo, or if anyone from the public may have seen the van at a nearby construction site earlier that day.
