Helped by four local players, the North downed the South 17-6 in last week’s 39th annual Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football Game at San Jose City College.
A close-to-capacity crowd attended the July 17 contest – also known as the Silicon Valley Youth Classic – which featured Santa Clara County’s top high school players from the Class of 2013.
St. Francis High’s Mike Lauck started at quarterback for the North and threw a touchdown pass on the team’s first series. On second down, he tossed a 40-yard strike to a well-covered Roland Luke from Wilcox for the score.
The University of La Verne-bound Lauck led the North on another scoring drive later in the quarter, a 26-yard field goal by Leigh’s Michael Leitchman.
The North held a 17-0 advantage at halftime and nearly shut out the South, which scored in the game’s final minute.
The North’s stingy defense included Mountain View High’s Joe Flores (defensive back) and Chad Schaumburg (linebacker), along with Homestead’s Mark Hirschbeck (defensive back), a Los Altos resident.
Flores and Schaumburg intend to play at Foothill College in the fall, while Hirschbeck is headed to rival De Anza College.
This marked the North’s first win in five years; the teams tied in 2009.
The annual all-star game honors the late Charlie Wedemeyer, the longtime Los Gatos football coach who suffered from ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease.
