Los Altos Police arrested a Mountain View resident March 27 on multiple charges after a solo drunk driving crash killed a passenger in his car.
Police and Santa Clara County Fire responders arrived at the crash site on Fremont Avenue and Marymeade Lane at 11:07 p.m. and found a 2005 Chevrolet with extensive damage on its passenger side and a passenger “gravely injured.”
Emergency medical personnel declared the 27-year-old male passenger – a Mountain View resident – dead at 11:15 p.m. on scene. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office is withholding the release of the victim’s identity pending notification of his family.
The driver of the vehicle, 33-year-old Miroslav Samardzija, was able to exit the car wreck and was later transported to a local hospital – where he currently remains – for treatment of moderate injuries, according to police. Officers later arrested Samardzija at the hospital for driving his vehicle while impaired. All told, Samardzija was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence and causing bodily injury, and reckless driving.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by Los Altos Police and the joint Palo Alto/Los Altos Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Los Altos Police Sergeant Paul Arguelles at 947-2770.
