Len Filppu, author of "Prime Time Dad: 45 Reasons to Embrace Midlife" will be appearing at Linden Tree for a reading and book signing 7 p.m. Friday, during the downtown Holiday Stroll event.
According to Filppu, there's a distinct trend toward later blooming parenthood, and "it’s an issue deserving of greater exploration." According to the National Center for Health Statistics, birthrates for American women aged 40 to 44 have hit their highest rate since 1967. And from 1980 to 2009, new dad rates in the U.S. rose 47 percent in the 35-39 age group and 61 percent in the 40-44 age group.
"When faced with first-time fatherhood at the age of 49, I didn't know whether to celebrate with champagne … or hemlock," Filppu said. "But it's turned out to be the best thing I've ever done. In fact, I was so surprised by the many mature-man skills I possess that help me to be a great dad that I’ve written a book about my experiences." To read more, visit http://www.primetimedads.com.
"Prime Time Dads" puts forth in humorous, heartfelt, real-life essays "the radical notion that mature men are actually well-suited for fatherhood," Filppu said, "that rather than being just better late than never, midlife fatherhood can actually be better later."
