Foothill fundraiser features gem sale

The Foothill Commission has scheduled the “Foothill Is a Gem Fundraiser” 4-6 p.m. Friday in the Campus Center Dining Room at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Jewelry showcased at the event includes earrings, hair combs, mixed-media amulets and necklaces.

Many of the featured pieces are from the collection of Foothill College President Judy C. Miner, who owns a gallery of couture costume items from the New York-based Lunch at The Ritz and San Francisco-based artist Masha Archer. Miner will be on hand at 5 p.m. to share the stories behind some of the key pieces from her extensive collection.

All artisans donate a percentage of their sales to Foothill’s nonprofit Stretch to Kindergarten program and Family Engagement Institute (FEI). FEI provides educational opportunities for underserved families with children. Stretch to Kindergarten is a tuition-free, parent-participation readiness program that offers low-income children support to transition into kindergarten.

A $20 tax-deductible donation is requested. Parking for the event is free. Lots 1 and 2-A provide access to the Campus Center.

The all-volunteer Foothill Commission supports the students, programs and services at the college. Local residents are invited to join the commission, which operates under the auspices of the Foothill-De Anza Foundation.

Library hosts talk on heirloom gardens

The Los Altos Library has scheduled the program “Growing an Heirloom Garden” 7 p.m. June 5 in the Program Room of the main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Photographer and author Rosalind Creasy will present an illustrated lecture on how to select, grow and cook with heirloom vegetables. She will also discuss how to find heirloom varieties of flowers like Love-Lies-Bleeding, Love-in-a-Puff, old roses and sweet peas.

Egyptian belly dancer visits Los Altos

The Soraya Zayed Dinner and Dance Show is scheduled 7-11:30 p.m. Saturday in Mirage Hall, 4926 El Camino Real, Los Altos.

The evening will include a Mediterranean buffet 7-9 p.m., a dance show headlined by Zayed 8:30-10 p.m. and DJ music and dancing 10-11:30 p.m.

Zayed, one of the top belly dancers in Egypt, mixes her Brazilian training with Middle Eastern passion.

Tickets are $60.

Relay For Life revs up June 15, 16

The 10th annual Relay For Life of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is scheduled 10 a.m. June 15 to 10 a.m. June 16 on the track at Egan Junior High School, 100 W. Portola Ave., Los Altos.

Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature fund- raiser, invites local residents to participate in a 24-hour walk designed to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who have died of the disease and fight back by raising money for research.
