New children’s book at Adventure Toys relates California’s construction history

Los Altos residents who have noticed the ongoing construction along San Antonio Road may be interested in the backstory of the 113-year-old California company performing the work.

The children’s picture book “Engine Number Ten” (Granite- rock, 2013) by Rose Ann Woolpert is available for purchase at Adventure Toys & Teachers’ Supplies, 173 Main St., Los Altos.

The book is based on stories from Granite Rock Co. and the trains it used for more than a century. Granite Rock’s Pavex Construction Division has worked on downtown Los Altos streetscape improvements over the past several months.

The Watsonville-based company, founded in 1900, today provides concrete, building and road materials to the construction industry throughout the region.

“This story tells how our region was built over the past century,” said Leslie Chiaverini of Adventure Toys, “and it brings the tale to life with an engine kids can visit today at the Railroad Museum in Sacramento.”

Chiaverini added that it’s fun for children – and parents – to be able to read a story about steam engines and construction that connects with their own neighborhood.
