Library Endowment sponsors essay contest
The Los Altos Library Endowment is sponsoring an essay contest centering on The Virginia Whipple Collection at the Los Altos Library.
The collection, which honors the library’s most generous donor, comprises a complete set of The Great Courses offered by The Teaching Company. Library cardholders are invited to submit short essays on how one or more items in the collection made a significant impact on them.
Essays should be no longer than 500 words.
Two prizes – $200 for first place, $100 for second – will be awarded by April 24.
The deadline is 6 p.m. April 12.
The contest is open to participants of all ages, however those under 18 require permission from an adult to participate. Entrants must pick up a copy of the contest rules and entry instructions at the Adult Reference Desk at the main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Horsemen’s Association offers essay contest
The Los Altos Hills Horsemen’s Association is sponsoring a student art and essay contest with the theme “Why I Love Horses in the Hills.”
The contest is open to children in Los Altos Hills. Judges will award prizes in three age categories: 8 and under, 9-12 and 13-17. Prizes will include a pony ride and other gifts for children 8 and under, and $50 gift certificates for the older age groups. Winners will be recognized at a Los Altos Hills City Council meeting in May.
“Our goals are basic: to promote interest in horses and to recognize how horses make our community unique,” said association member Jolon Wagner.
Essays should be no more than 400 words, with a concentration on theme development, creativity, writing style, fluency, voice and uniqueness. Any type of art is encouraged, from abstract to traditional. Various media may be used, but work is required to adhere to the theme, feature at least one horse and be created by the student alone. Participants must include name, address and contact information.
The deadline for submissions is April 19. Winners will be announced sometime in May.

French Fair benefits nonprofit Partners
The eighth annual Peninsula French Fair, “A Day in France,” is scheduled 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 23 at the Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.
Visitors will have an opportunity to browse booths featuring vendors and artists offering a wide range of services and unique products. Highlights of the fair include a fashion show with the latest creations from French designers, French music and crepes and pastries from French bakeries.
Proceeds from the event benefit fair co-organizer Partners for New Generations, a local nonprofit agency that provides mentors and tutors to aid students with challenges in local schools. For more information, visit www.pngmvla.org.

Architect Leo Marmol is scheduled to discuss his firm’s design work and approach to restoration of homes designed by notable 20th-century architects 6 p.m. Thursday in Hillview Community Center’s Social Hall, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. A catered reception follows at Los Altos Neutra House, 181 Hillview Ave.
Marmol, managing principal of the Los Angeles-based Marmol Radziner, is the sixth speaker in the 2012-2013 Los Altos Neutra House Architecture + Design Speaker Series. The firm’s restoration projects include early modernist homes like Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House, Rudolf Schindler’s Eliot House and John Lautner’s Garcia House.
The Los Altos Neutra House sponsors the speaker series, designed to provide an opportunity to explore trends and traditions in architecture and design in a casual setting.
Tickets are $20 general admission, $10 students. The reception is $20 per person, subject to space availability.
Panel discusses refugee crisis
The World Affairs Council Peninsula Chapter has scheduled a panel on “International Humanitarian Law and the Growing Crisis of Refugees and Displaced People” March 20 at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road. Refreshments will be served at 7 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30.
Participants include Katie Zoglin, international human rights lawyer; John Regas of the National Intelligence Council; and Hans Van de Weerd, executive director of the International Rescue Committee. The presentation will touch on international humanitarian law, technical tracking and the growing crisis of refugees from regional conflicts.

Pops Orchestra performs Sunday at Foothill
The California Pops Orchestra has scheduled a concert, “Big Band Hits from the 30s, 40s & Beyond,” 3 p.m. Sunday at Foothill College’s Smithwick Theatre, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.
The performance will feature hits by Frank Sinatra, Artie Shaw and Duke Ellington as well as an appearance by the Black Tie Jazz Band and singer Pierce Brandt.

‘Los Altos Live!’ auditions slated
“Los Altos Live!,” the fifth annual talent show featuring local performers, is scheduled 7:30 p.m. April 20 at Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.
Auditions are scheduled noon to 4 p.m. April 6 and 7 in Room 803 at Los Altos High.
Proceeds from the Los Altos Cultural Association-sponsored event benefit the Camp Everytown program.
Encore! event encourages involvement
The Rotary Club of Los Altos’ Partners for Elder Generations has scheduled its annual “Encore! Investigate Your Passion and Get Involved” event 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23 at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road.
Encore! is an interactive event for adults 50 and older featuring more than 25 nonprofit exhibits, lunch and a panel discussion on encore career opportunities.
