Ardy Bazarian, manager of the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop at 243 Main St. in Los Altos, sits alongside an 1850s-era spinning wheel, one of several antiques for sale at the store. Standing at right is Discovery Shop volunteer Dennis Duffy. The spinning wheel is from a household in Fayette County, Pa. It was purchased by Ray Ocock of Somerset, Pa., in the 1940s and brought to California by daughter Elizabeth Becker (wife of former Los Altos Mayor Lou Becker). The spinning wheel is restored and in working order – wool accessories come with it. “This is one of the rare, unusual donations given to the Los Altos American Cancer Society Discovery Shop,” Bazarian said. “You never know what you’ll discover in the store.” Other unique items include on old schoolhouse desk “in lovely condition,” Bazarian said, a 1940s-era Singer sewing machine in working condition and an 18th-century American Colonial Windsor farm chair. Proceeds from the shop support research in the fight against cancer. For more information, call 949-0505.
