Cub Scouts from approximately 35 local schools are scheduled to compete in the Stanford District Pacific Skyline Pinewood Derby noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.
The district includes Los Altos, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and parts of Santa Clara.
Each Cub Scout pack has already conducted its own Pinewood Derby race – the winners from each of the packs will compete at Saturday’s event.
Pack 77 from Almond School organized the event, and Red Racer Hobby Shop on State Street is the sponsor.
New to this year’s Pinewood Derby is the Outlaw Division, scheduled 3:30-4:30 p.m., in which nearly anything goes. Anyone, young or old, may enter a Pinewood Derby car in the Outlaw Division.
“If they don’t have a car, they can still participate – Pack 77 and the Almond Girl Scouts will loan them a car they made,” said Pack 77 Cubmaster Jeanne Schmitt.
According to Schmitt, a representative of the Los Altos Police Department will be on hand to interact with participants.
“We’re getting a huge turnout – all the schools are participating,” she said. “It’s really going to be an especially fun event this year.”
Admission is free and open to the public.
