Historical Essay Contest still accepting submissions

The deadline for the 30th annual Margaret Thompson Historical Essay Contest is March 7.

Co-sponsored by the Los Altos Historical Commission and the Los Altos History Museum, the contest is open to third- through sixth-graders who live in the area and/or attend local schools.

The theme of this year’s contest complements the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s “Project Los Altos: SFMOMA in Silicon Valley.” The essay prompt: “Take a journey into your mind and imagine what would happen if your favorite work of art came alive. Describe an experience or adventure that happened one day. Within your writing, identify your work of art and tell where it is located.”

Judging will occur the last weekend in March. Three winners at each grade level will receive cash prizes: first place, $50; second, $30; and third, $20.

Winners will be notified the first week in May with a personal letter and an invitation to an ice cream social held on the History Museum’s patio May 13. Winners will receive their awards from Mayor Megan Satterlee later that evening at the Los Altos City Council meeting.
