The Build-a-Box project needs volunteers as organizers prepare their annual Thanksgiving deliveries to hundreds of needy families.
The Monday before Thanksgiving, helpers assemble and deliver boxes with a turkey, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, potatoes, dinner rolls and a pumpkin pie to those who otherwise would not have had a dinner.
Last year, the Build-a-Box project provided 450 Thanksgiving meals, and volunteers hope to serve 475 families this year.
The boxes containing the meals are no longer donated, so project supporters are asking individuals or companies to underwrite the expense, which is tax deductible.
In 1987, the late Art Scott, a local realtor, founded the Thanksgiving Build-a-Box project. Over the past 25 years, the volunteer program has provided Thanksgiving dinners to thousands of families in need. In memory of Scott, who died in 2003, his family and friends continue the tradition each year.
