The Build-a-Box project provides Thanksgiving dinners to hundreds of needy families by delivering a box with a turkey and all the fixings to those who otherwise would not have had a dinner.
The boxes containing the meals are no longer donated, so project supporters are asking individuals or companies to underwrite the estimated $700 expense. The full boxes are scheduled to be delivered by Nov. 22, in time for Thanksgiving.
“The demand is greater,” said Build-A-Box committee member Valerie Smith. “We are adding 30 more families (325 total), and need volunteers and financial donations.”
In 1987, the late Art Scott, a local realtor, began the Thanksgiving Build-a-Box project. For more than 20 years, the volunteer program has provided Thanksgiving dinners to hundreds of needy families.
In memory of Scott, who died in 2003, his family and friends continue the tradition each year.
