Nearly two dozen girls from the San Juan School of Dance attended the American Dance Awards National Convention in Boston July 1-7, competing against dancers from across the United States, Canada, South Africa and Ecuador.
Among the San Juan dancers were three reigning solo titleholders from the California regional event: Nicole Carey, Young Dancer of the Year; Sarah Martinez, Junior Dancer of the Year; and Jolena Ma, Dancer of the Year. The girls competed for the national title in their respective groups.
The San Juan Sensations performed 27 routines over the course of the week, with all members receiving Gold and Ultimate Gold awards, the highest adjudications. Two of the routines were selected for the 12 & Under Dance Off to re-compete against the top routines from the entire ADA National Performing Arts Competition.
Outside of competition, the week included a full schedule of dance classes with master teachers in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, acro and musical theater.
The San Juan Sensations are under the direction of Jordan Micek and artistic director Suzanne San Juan.
