Rotary Club of Los Altos Scholarship Chairman Lew Fraser reported that the club nearly doubled the number of college scholarships awarded this year.
Proceeds from the preceding year’s Fine Art in the Park show fund the scholarships. The high level of support at last year’s fundraiser enabled the club this year to offer scholarships to 15 high school seniors, who will benefit from the $22,000 raised at Fine Art in the Park and from private donations in the memory of Charles Cowan, Mary Marley and former Rotary Club of Los Altos President Billy Russell.
The club selected the scholarship recipients based on three criteria: community service, need and grade-point average. The Rotary committee interviewed the candidates, and their respective high school principals introduced the winners to an assembly of students and parents May 22.
The winners and their colleges:
• Alta Vista High School: Jasmine Jara, West Valley College.
• Los Altos High School: Stephanie Yau, Cal Poly; Anastassiya Bronnikova, University of Nevada, Reno; Arissa Wongpanich, UC Berkeley; Alicia Herrera, Cal State East Bay; Eina Suarez (Billy Russell Scholarship), Foothill College; Barbara Garcia, Clark College; Dafne Hernandez, San Francisco State University; Jennifer Corona, Cal State East Bay; and Rosa Carrera, UC Merced.
• Mountain View High School: Selina Ellis, Cal State East Bay; Zhizi Xiao, University of Oregon; and Jessica Fernandez, Humboldt State University.
• St. Francis High School: Anmol Thiara (Charles Cowan Scholarship), Santa Clara University, and Antonio Conte (Mary Marley Scholarship), University of the Pacific.
Each year, the intermediate school principals select four outstanding students for their leadership and service. The students receive $50 Books Inc. gift cards from the Rotary Club of Los Altos. The winners: Michael Byun and Serena Myjer from Blach Intermediate School and Sydney Taylor and Nao Tanase from Egan Junior High.
