Los Altos Forward volunteers celebrated the second anniversary of First Friday events at a Dec. 6 party at Nature Gallery.
A grassroots group supported by the Los Altos Community Foundation, Los Altos Forward comprises local residents, business owners and property owners who promote community vibrancy in downtown Los Altos.
“First Fridays are exciting because they are multigenerational events that bring the community together,” said Carol Garsten, owner of Nature Gallery.
Monthly First Fridays are designed to encourage people to visit downtown to socialize while supporting local businesses and restaurants. Each First Friday boasts a theme, many of which highlight the work of other community organizations. Over the past two years, First Friday has saluted local veterans in partnership with the Rotary Club of Los Altos, joined forces with Los Altos School District art docent Kimberly Dickerson to feature a “Los Altos Youth Welcomes SFMOMA” theme and collaborated with the Los Altos Village Association to host the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Community Plaza.
First Fridays include live music from students and adults, coordinated by Jacqueline Trager, extended shopping hours and a scavenger hunt and drawing. Student volunteers from the high school Key Club and retired seniors welcome attendees on the streets and distribute information on the evening’s activities.
“It has been very exciting and rewarding to experience the support of the downtown businesses, the Town Crier, the city, property owners and the community toward making our downtown vibrant and special,” said Joe Eyre, founder of First Fridays. “First Fridays have broadened perspectives from which even more innovative ideas will develop in the near future.”
In 2014, Garsten and Jamie Lucia of Los Altos Community Chiropractic will co-lead First Friday planning and events.
Despite a busy holiday season, First Friday organizers aren’t slowing down to start the new year. The next First Friday is scheduled Jan. 3.
