Los Altos artist Lindy Lopez is scheduled to display her colorful jewelry and clothing designs this weekend at the Fine Art in the Park show at Lincoln Park. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Los Altos.
The Rotary Club of Los Altos selected Los Altos designer Lindy Lopez to participate as a juried artist at its annual Fine Art in the Park show, scheduled Saturday and Sunday at Lincoln Park.
Lopez has been designing clothing, jewelry and accessories full time for 10 years through her 7Hands Design company. She began her career by creating styles to complement her jewelry. A decade later, she’s invited to juried art shows once a month or so and displays her artisan-crafted clothing and jewelry at Aegis Gallery in Saratoga.
7Hands Design, her sales and workshop location near Santana Row in San Jose, is stocked with handmade fabrics from Guatemala and hand-dyed indigo from Mali that combine with the African beads Lopez collects during her travels. Closer to home, she attends the Tucson Bead Show, the largest bead show in the world.
“Sometimes it takes a while for a piece to find its owner,” said Lopez, noting that busy, professional women who know their style recognize the appropriate clothing for their look when they see it. “It’s an immediate connection when they see the finished piece, and they usually shop alone because they don’t need friends’ opinions to make a decision.”
Lopez said she loves the paper-thin indigo preferred by chieftains in Mali. She employs trained pattern drafters to create patterns on acetate using long rulers and T-squares. They then cut and drape in muslin before spending four to six hours laying it out on the traditional fabric to maintain its integrity.
The fabrics are not to be wasted, according to Lopez, because they are unique, with family patterns made for centuries and passed down through generations. It requires industrial machines – sergers capable of stitching through multiple layers of fabric – to create the garments Lopez designs in a style she calls “traditional with a modern twist.”
Lopez plans to display and sell a variety of 7Hands Design styles at the Fine Art in the Park show.
