4/24/1946 – 9/29/2011
Resident of Los Altos and Santa Cruz, CA
“A great beacon light has gone dark and I can’t imagine my life without her. My source of braveness in the face of adversity, my wise person, funny, sturdy, stable, my optimist on steroids, my friend…. I always knew Phyllis was there for me even though I live on a rock in the middle of the ocean…. She was my personal glass of champagne and now that glass is empty…. Thank God I was one of the lucky ones to be in her life and she so much in mine.” (A friend who lives on Kauai.)
Phyllis passed unexpectedly Thursday, September 29th at El Camino Hospital, Mountain View, CA. Born April 24, 1946 in Campton, NH, she was the youngest of three sisters of Phillip Roberts and Frieda Eaton Roberts. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, Edward (Ted) Semple, in 1966. They lived in Connecticut and Harvard, Massachusetts until 1986 when they moved to Los Altos where she has been Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Los Altos for over 24 years. Her volunteers were an important part of her life and many became dear friends. She was active in the Los Altos Sister Cities program and established sister city ties with Rustington, England. She and Ted lived half time in Santa Cruz, CA where she enjoyed walking along the ocean with her beloved dogs. They also spent several weeks every year in Kauai.
She will be greatly missed by her Loving husband Ted, her children Bethani Semple of Los Altos, Tod Semple and his partner Lindsey Kurz of Woodside, CA, Renee Switkes and her husband Jon of San Jose, her sister Janet Smith of Chatham, LA, her grandchildren Kira and Kailey of Los Altos, Jason and Rylie of San Jose. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Cynthia Eichholz of Fredericksburg, VA.
A memorial service celebrating her life was held at Spangler Mortuary in Los Altos. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the American Heart Society, the Los Altos Community Foundation or the Silicon Valley Humane Society.
