Earthworks may not be the largest shop in downtown Los Altos, but it ranks among the top 50 jewelry-design retailers in the nation, according to JCK Magazine, a leading trade publication.
JCK (Jewelers’ Circular Keystone) recently rated Earthworks – the 2,200-square-foot shop at 290 Main St., specializing in jewelry, woodwork and glass – among the top 50 Designer Retailers for 2011-2012.
“It’s a great vote of confidence that the designers enjoy working with Earthworks and our customers,” Earthworks co-owner Ellen Sullivan Davis said.
According to a JCK press release, Earthworks earned the recognition by meeting three requirements: educating the consumer on the quality and value of designer jewelry, displaying and merchandising designer products for maximum salability and commitment to fair business practices. The business owners received an award June 23 at JCK’s buying event in Las Vegas.
Earthworks prides itself on artistic quality, unique and distinct products and customer satisfaction, according to Davis. It succeeds by “creating an environment that is warm and welcoming and super-fun to be in,” she said. “We really encourage women to play.”
The store resembles a giant treasure chest, according to Claudia Sullivan Paullus, who founded Earthworks in 1979. Women are encouraged to browse through the jewelry and try on anything that interests them, especially if they are unsure where their tastes lie.
Davis and friend Mary O’Neal purchased the business from Paullus last year. Since then, Earthworks has acted as a retailer for local and national artists. The shop’s inventory includes works by approximately 35 artists, including Gurhan Orhan, Todd Reed, Marco Bicego, Emily Armenta and Jill Platner.
“We’re known in the industry for having a wide selection with depth,” Davis said.
Earthworks’ inventory ranges from high-end jewelry to what Davis called “attainable fashion jewelry.”
With the overwhelming amount of jewelry for sale in today’s market, Davis considers it her responsibility – and her co-workers’ – to provide customers with the best selection of jewelry.
“We’re the editors,” she said.
