Esprit de Core Pilates tailors sessions to individual needs

Vera Szepesi demonstrates a Pilates position, one of many that can be inculcated into clients’ indivdualized routines.

For Vera Szepesi, the switch from attorney to Pilates instructor was an easy transition from a job she didn’t enjoy to one she loves.

“No one’s mad at me when I come here,” said Szepesi, founder and owner of the Esprit de Core Pilates Studio, 895 Sherwood Ave., Suite 200, in Los Altos. “I mostly enjoy interacting with people.”

She plans to schedule an open house during the summer to celebrate the studio’s four-year anniversary.

After suffering a foot injury that traditional medical methods had failed to properly diagnose and treat, Szepesi tried Pilates. She was impressed with the mental well-being Pilates brought in additional to its excellent healing powers.

“It made me comfortable in my own skin,” she said. “It teaches yourself about your body.”

Pilates involves special equipment and movements that act on core muscles, and addresses everything from back pain to coordination.

Unlike other “no pain, no gain” exercise approaches, Pilates involves no pain and still includes a strengthening component.

The biggest myth about Pilates, she said, is “that it’s for girls.” Men, too, she said, can benefit from the strengthening and toning it provides.

Szepesi offers an introductory session for $45.
