Elegant custom homes, created by well-known developer Brad Blackman, are currently being built in Los Altos.
Blackman recently retired from Blackman Flynn & Co., a company he co-founded in 1981. He remains a director and majority shareholder of the San Francisco real estate banking firm.
As a Los Altos Hills resident for more than 17 years, Blackman's early retirement (45) has allowed him to carefully choose his opportunities with the same commitment his endeavors in real estate merchant banking enjoyed.
"I cannot think of a better place to apply my experience than Los Altos. The diverse, highly-educated population, a sense of community, casual, family-oriented lifestyle and vibrant economy make this a good place to build," Blackman said.
His first endeavor is in the custom home market of North Los Altos where he is creating a limited signature series of "casual-elegant homes" in the area's most prime neighborhoods.
His vision, financial skills, development expertise, global contacts and ability to secure prime locations were the driving force behind his firm's highly-successful and well-known Union Square venture that included Postrio (with celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck), Kuleto's and Vertigo restaurants; and the Prescott, Villa Florence and Monticello Inn boutique hotels.
Blackman has led his firm over the last 15 years in more than 300 financing operations exceeding $3 billion, they cover a wide range of real estate projects including custom homes, large residential tracks, apartments, hotels, resorts, high-rise office buildings and more than 3 million square feet of Silicon Valley corporate headquarters, research and development and warehouse facilities.
When Blackman selects a location, he looks for:
A special lot with its own character and intrinsic value.
No freeway, expressway or busy street noise.
Easy walk to downtown Los Altos and surrounding parks.
Excellent elementary middle and high schools within walking distance.
Privacy and safety for the family, together with a long list of other features.
"I intend to create only 20-25 of these special "Custom Dream Homes" over the next several years. Each one will be different from the other and reflect the personality and desired lifestyle of my clients," Blackman said. "To my knowledge, this has never been done in Los Altos and has been exclusively available only to residents of Los Altos Hills. I believe there is a growing demand from a wide variety of prospective home buyers who want a 3,000-4,000 square foot custom home on a smaller lot to enjoy the benefits of a great location and realize a savings of $500,00 -$1,000,000 over comparable homes on an acre in Los Altos Hills."
Two of Blackman's more recent developments received City of Los Altos approval and will be ready for move-in before Christmas this year. The first was purchased within a few days of having the concept created.
"We have lived in many custom homes over the past 25 years, however, the Blackman concept was a whole new approach and pleasant experience," said Walter Rossi, a client of Blackman's. "He has a keen sense of quality, understands our lifestyle and made the entire experience a fun, exciting and effortless endeavor. Our job has been simply to express our needs and the way we wish to live."
Paul Eckert, a real estate broker in Los Altos said, "There is no question that for those who do not want to wait any longer, can afford the best and wish to live in Los Altos, Mr. Blackman's "Custom Dreams" has what a buyer is looking for. He has just completed his concept for a 'Los Altos-French Country' home design that is absolutely great. I am sure he will have it sold well before he breaks ground. The floor plan, landscape design and exterior elevations are striking. A real masterpiece from an extremely talented team."
