The Sereno Group of Los Altos is pitching in to support a valued community resource for seniors.
The real estate company, located at 369 S. San Antonio Road, recently donated $10,372.59 to the Los Altos Senior Center. Company representatives presented the check at the Jan. 28 Los Altos City Council meeting. Candace Avina, Los Altos recreation coordinator, said the donation would help fund programming needs at the center, located on the Hillview Community Center campus.
“We are honored to be the recipients of this generous donation, which will be used to help improve our existing programs and facility so that we can continue offering an engaging, friendly and safe place for seniors in Los Altos,” Avina said in an email to the Town Crier.
Sereno Group broker associate Diane Schmitz said the donation was a “rewarding experience” resulting from the company’s 1 Percent for Good Campaign, founded in November 2012. Sereno Group agents donate 1 percent of their commissions to the campaign. The funds are awarded quarterly to an organization that makes a positive impact on the local communities.
“We try to focus on nonprofit organizations that serve children and adults in need,” said Schmitz, who noted that her company also made a recent donation in the same amount to the Sunbeam Foundation, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to curing pediatric bone cancer.
Schmitz said the company chose the Los Altos Senior Center as its recent quarterly recipient after she and a group of colleagues toured the facility last summer. Inspired by what they saw, the group left the tour determined to lend a helping hand, she said.
“There are so many things there that are lacking, compared to other cities’ senior centers,” said Schmitz, who added that her real estate group is also funding the installation of a new bench in front of the center. “We just really wanted to help improve the environment there.”
