‘The Sacramento: A Transcendent River’ (River Bend Books, 2013)
By Bob Madgic with Walt Simmons
“The Sacramento: A Transcendent River” is the first comprehensive book on one of the most important rivers in the world. Through narrative and photography, Madgic traces the river from its headwaters to its estuary, chronicling its human history from pre-Euro-Americans to the present.
The book includes accounts of where the river has undergone alterations and degradations, often with damaging consequences. “The Sacramento” illuminates the major issues surrounding the vital waterway.
The central theme of “The Sacramento” is the power and beauty of the natural river. While acknowledging that the river’s dammed and diverted waters are what made California what it is today, Madgic argues that a river functions best when it is allowed to proceed as nature intended.
Madgic is former principal of Los Altos High School and Simmons a Los Altos High alumnus.
