PA Players opens 'Vanya' this weekend

Palo Alto Players is slated to perform Christopher Durang’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” Friday through June 26 at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road.

The play combines themes from Chekhov’s works with a modern, comedy-filled atmosphere, featuring main characters Vanya and his stepsister Sonia, who live together in the countryside and receive a surprise visit from Masha, their movie star sister. Masha brings her younger “boy toy” Spike, and the household falls into chaos as insecurity, love and sibling rivalry take over.

'Autumn' arrives at TheatreWorks

TheatreWorks’ regional premiere of “The Velocity of Autumn” is scheduled to run through June 26 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St.

Eric Coble’s play centers on Alexandra (Susan Greenhill), an octogenarian artist who barricades herself in her Brooklyn brownstone, booby-trapped with enough homemade bombs to take out the neighborhood. In a wry, spirited quest to “not go gentle” into a retirement home, she battles the fears of her family and the ravages of time, negotiating the terms of her future with long-estranged son Chris (Mark Anderson Phillips), who is battling his own problems.
