Los Altos Youth Theatre and Los Altos Stage Company’s collaborative production of “The Wizard of Oz” is slated to close Sunday at Bus Barn Theater, 97 Hillview Ave.

The play, based on the 1900 book by L. Frank Baum, is adapted by John Kane from the classic film with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg.

Nearly 40 local youth divided into two casts fill out the production. Ian Leonard directs, with vocal direction by Sheila Townsend and choreography by Jillian Toby Cummings.

The show includes three professional actors who also serve as teaching artists for the youth – Townsend (portraying the role of Glinda), Kimberly Kaye (the Wicked Witch) and Daniel P. Wilson (the Wizard, Professor).

Lead actors in two casts include Osher Fein and Shaina Hammer as Dorothy, Sarah Traina and Natasha Balogh as the Scarecrow, Timmy Smith and Dana Levy as the Tin Man and Rebecca Krieger and Elizabeth Kristian as the Cowardly Lion.

Pati Bristow, LAYT business manager, said that although her group and Los Altos Stage Company (formerly Bus Barn Stage Company) have shared the same theater for nearly 20 years, the organizations had never collaborated on a production or shared production resources in any significant way.

Based on the success of the pilot project, Bristow said, the two theater troupes intend to mount additional co-productions on an annual basis with the goal of creating greater integration and synergy.

Performances are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $15 for youth/seniors and $20 for adults.
