“Pygmalion” stars Ray R. Renati as Professor Hig- gins and Katie Rose Krueger as Eliza Doolittle.

The Pear Avenue Theatre is slated to present “Pygmalion” Thursday through July 13 in Mountain View. The theater is located at 1220 Pear Ave.

“Pygmalion” closes Pear’s 13th season.

George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” premiered in London in April 1914. It is a critique of the rigid British class system of the day as well as a commentary on the inequality of economics and gender.

“Pygmalion” is the romantic tale of an East End flower girl and her West End phonetics tutor. Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet with his friend, Col. Pickering, that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an elegant, upper-crust event. He schools her in the external trappings of gentility, the most obvious evidence of which is perfect enunciation and speech.

Michael Champlin directs “Pygmalion,” which features Ray R. Renati as Higgins and Katie Rose Krueger as Doolittle. The ensemble includes Caroline Clark, Helena G. Clarkson, Daniel Hurst, Troy Johnson, Ann Kuchins, Leslie Newport, Jackie O’Keefe and Todd Wright.

Performances are scheduled 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays and July 5. Thursday’s performance is a preview. There is no performance July 4.

Tickets are $10-$35, with discounts available for seniors, students and groups.
