Foothill Music Theatre presents the musical comedy “Little Shop of Horrors” through March 9 in the Loh- man Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Featuring music by Alan Menken and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, “Horrors” is about a down-and-out floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving.

Directed by Milissa Carey, the play features musical direction by Dolores Duran-Cefalu and choreography by Amanda Folena.

The cast includes Adam Cotugno (as Seymour), Adrienne Walters (Audrey), Todd Wright (Mr. Mushnik), Jeff Clarke (Orin), James Lewis (voice of Audrey II), Lyn Mehe’ula (Crystal), Melissa Baxter (Chiffon) and Megan Coomans (Ronette).

The rock musical is based on Roger Corman’s comedy-horror film of the same name. Released in 1960, it was shot in two days using sets that had been left standing from a previous production.

Featuring little-known actor Jack Nicholson, the film was not initially a commercial success. It slowly gained a cult following, however, and in 1982 was adapted for the stage by then-unknowns Ashman and Menken.

The musical version reduced the cast, simplified the story and brought a sense of farce and fun to the story.

Directed by Ashman, the show won several awards, including the 1982-1983 New York Drama Critics Circle Award. When it closed after a five-year run and 2,209 performances, “Horrors” was the third-longest-running musical and the highest-grossing production in Off-Broadway history.

The musical was adapted for the silver screen in 1986, starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, and enjoyed a Tony-nominated Broadway revival in 2003.

Performances of the Foothill production are slated 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $10-$28.
