West Bay Opera’s “L’elisir d’amore” is slated to close Sunday at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.
Sung in Italian with English titles, “L’elisir d’amore” (“The Elixir of Love”) is a new production of Gaetano Donizetti’s comic opera. It is the story of a country bumpkin who falls in love with a beautiful and inaccessible landowner, whom he wins over with the help of an Italian-style snake-oil salesman.
The fully staged production includes a blend of sets and projections to re-create the original Italian countryside setting.
José Luis Moscovich, West Bay Opera’s general director and conductor, said “L’elisir” has a “pretty extraordinary cast.” Maria Fernanda Brea stars as Adina. The young Venezuelan soprano is “heading for a spectacular career,” Moscovich said.
The cast features tenor Chester Pidduck (as Nemorino), baritone Igor Vieira (Dr. Dulcamara), Krassen Karagiozov (Belcore) and Molly Mahoney (Giannetta).
Performances are slated 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $40-$75.
