Robert Sean Campbell and Patricia Pitpitan star in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

The Los Altos Stage Company actors and staff acquit themselves admirably in the stage production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” scheduled to run through Feb. 16 at Bus Barn Theater.

Many of us remember the movie version of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which starred Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. The script for the movie was toned down to conform to the moral standards of the time. The play has since been updated and acknowledges its homosexual themes.

The story revolves around a Southern family facing many difficult challenges, including the imminent death of patriarch Big Daddy and the troubled marriage of his son Brick – an alcoholic ex-football star – and Brick’s lively wife, Maggie (the “Cat” in the story).

Robert Campbell (Brick) handles his demanding role with natural grace. Campbell, who earned a theater arts degree from Santa Clara University, described his role as “cool” and “interesting.”

Patricia Pitpitan (Maggie) has a long opening monologue. When asked how she memorized it, Pitpitan said she broke it down into three-minute snippets. A native of the Philippines, Pitpitan moved to the U.S. at age 8.

John Baldwin (Big Daddy) has performed with Los Altos Stage Company and many other local theater troupes. Sheila Ellam (Big Momma) is perfect in her role – raised in Alabama, she has a natural Southern accent.

Danny Martin (Gooper), Hannah Larson (Mae), Jim Johnson (Reverend Tooker), Scott Stanley (Dr. Baugh) and Belgica Paola Rodriguez (Sookey) round out the talented cast.

Dawn Monique Williams ably directs the play. She has 15 years’ experience as a director and teaches theater courses at Cal State East Bay.

Shows are scheduled 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays at Bus Barn Theater, 97 Hillview Ave. Tickets are $18-$32.
