PA Players launches 'Heiress' Friday night at Lucie Stern Theatre

Palo Alto Players is slated to present “The Heiress” Friday through Feb. 2 at Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

Inspired by the Henry James novel “Washington Square” and written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, the drama is a story of wealth, class and the cost of love.

In elegant Washington Square in 1850s New York, a wealthy widower has never gotten over the loss of his wife during childbirth – a woman of beauty, confidence and grace. His plain, dutiful daughter Catherine lacks these qualities – just as she lacks her father’s affection and approval.

Soon, Catherine’s opulent but sheltered world is interrupted by the attentions of a charismatic young suitor. Catherine is left to decide if she will empower herself with the skills needed to navigate the narrow course between desire and obedience, heart and heartache, betrayal and revenge.

Miriam Ani stars as Catherine. Dennis Lickteig directs.

Performances are scheduled 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Friday’s show is a preview and Saturday is opening night.

Tickets are $23-$45.
