The Los Altos Stage Company is scheduled to present the world’s longest running musical, “The Fantasticks,” Thursday through Sept. 29 at Bus Barn Theater, 97 Hillview Ave.

Loosely based on Edmond Rostand’s “The Romancers,” “The Fantasticks” tells the tale of Matt and Luisa, young lovers kept apart by their feuding parents – or so they think.

Fueled by their parents’ feigned loathing, Matt and Luisa overcome all obstacles to be together. But when they discover that their parents’ grudge is a ploy to ensure the lovers’ marriage, Matt and Luisa’s passions for one another wane until they see the truth in the words of the play’s Svengali-esque narrator, El Gallo: “Without a hurt, the heart is hollow.”

“The Fantasticks” features music by Harvey Schmidt and book and lyrics by Tom Jones. Gary Landis, executive director of the Los Altos Stage Company, directs, supported by Gus Kambeitz (music direction) and Jillian Toby-Cummings (choreography).

The cast includes Dan Kapler as El Gallo, Ryan Mardesich as Matt, Casey Ellis as Luisa, Todd Wright as Hucklebee, Ruth E Stein as Bellomy, Martin Gagen as Henry, Ryk Houseman as Mortimer and Spencer Grey as The Mute.

Thursday’s preview is scheduled 8 p.m., as is Friday’s opening-night performance. Future shows are slated 3 p.m. Sundays and 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Tickets are $18 for the preview, $36 opening night (includes reception with the artists) and $18-$30 for future shows.
