Los Altos Stage Company’s production of “Avenue Q” features, from left, David Mister (as Trekkie Monster), Nicole Julien (Gary Coleman) and Warren Wernick (Nicky).

The Los Altos Stage Company (formerly Bus Barn Stage Company) is scheduled to present “Avenue Q” Thursday through June 22 at Bus Barn Theater, 97 Hillview Ave.

With a cast of puppets and humans, “Avenue Q” has been described as “‘Sesame Street’ for adult audiences.”

The irreverent musical comedy centers on Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone’s looking for the same things: a decent job, a stable relationship and a life purpose. Eventually, Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that the real world isn’t so bad after all.

The play features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty. It is based on an original concept by Lopez and Marx.

“Avenue Q” won the 2003 Tony Award “Triple Crown” – Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

Michael Ryken directs the Los Altos Stage Company production, which features music direction by Mark Hanson.

The cast includes Anthony Chan (as Princeton), Cassie Blake (Lucy), Mylissa Malley (Kate Monster), Warren Wernick (Nicky), David Mister (Trekkie Monster), Mark Sanders (Bad Idea Bear), Adam Cotugno (Brian), Kathryn Han (Christmas Eve), Nicole Julien (Gary Coleman), Tomas Theriot (Rod) and Jen Wheatonfox (Bad Idea Bear and Mrs. T).

Due to adult situations, “Avenue Q” may be inappropriate for children under 13 or people who are easily offended.

Performances are slated 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays; 7:30 p.m. June 5, 12 and 19; and 3 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $18-$36.
