Stepping Out

‘Nickel & Dimed’ continues at Foothill College

The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department is slated to present “Nickel & Dimed” through June 9 at Foothill’s Lohman Theatre, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.

Written by Joan Holden and directed by Tom Gough, the play is based on Barbara Ehrenreich’s best-seller “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America.”

“Nickel & Dimed” addresses how a middle-aged, middle-class woman can survive after she suddenly must make beds all day in a hotel and live on $7 an hour. Because a low-paying job won’t pay the rent, she’ll have to work back-to-back shifts as a chambermaid and waitress to make ends meet.

Ehrenreich set out to research low-wage life firsthand, confident she was prepared for the worst. The book chronicles her low-wage odyssey.

“Nickel” features Jerris Ramirez, Nicholas Schmittzeh and Rome Silvas. The production team includes Bruce McLeod (scenic design), Carol Clever (costume design) and Charnee Young (stage manager).

Shows are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays.

For tickets ($10-$18; plus $3 parking) and more information, call 949-7360 or visit www.foothill.edu/theatre.
