California Theatre Center presents “The Women” – the last production of its Summer Rep season – through Friday in the Sunnyvale Theatre at the Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive.
First performed on Broadway in 1936, Clare Boothe Luce’s social satire centers on a group of gossipy, high-society women in Manhattan who spend their days playing bridge, discussing intrigues at the beauty salon and haunting fashion shows.
The idealistic, happily wed Mary Haines finds her marriage in trouble when flirtatious, manipulative shop girl Crystal Allen gets her hooks into Mary’s man. She is aided and abetted by her friends, colorful characters with romantic problems of their own. The play touches on themes of marriage and divorce, socioeconomic class, friendship, standards of beauty and the role of women in the modern world.
Directed by Will Huddleston, “Women” has an all-female cast that includes CTC alumnae.
Performances are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Tickets are $10-$26.
